Truck air brake system faults, what you need to know

Air brakes are responsible for ensure the safe stoppage of your heavy vehicle. If one of the components is not working correctly, the system can fail. If you suspect you have an issue with your truck's air braking system, make sure you contact your local diesel mechanic to have an expert assess the problem.
How to tell if you air brakes are not working properly

It is important to ensure your air brake system is working correctly to ensure your vehicle is able to stop safely. A problem with one component will often cause other problems to occur in additional parts of the system as well.
Some common air brake system faults are the following:
  • Compressors: as this component is cooled and lubricated by the engine, excessive oil or coolant leakages in the system can cause damage to the compressor. Additionally, if you notice your compressor is making an abnormal amount of noise, there could be a loose part or it may be worn out. If you are unsure it is best to contact your local diesel mechanic.
  • Air Dryers: unlike compressors, this component cycles on and off when not in use and is responsible for removing impurities from the air. They need to be serviced periodically to avoid dirty air cycling through the air brakes and causing damage to the system. If you notice the air compressor is continuously running, this may be a sign the air system has a leak. Remember without air, this brake system cannot operate so it is crucial to ensure your system is working properly.
  • Reservoir (supply) tanks: Supply tanks are responsible for storing air and maintaining pressure within the air brake system. It is essential this component is checked regularly for damage because if there is an issue in one of the tanks, it can inhibit the vehicles ability to stop. Condensation can appear inside the tanks due to moisture in the air itself, if there is an accumulation of water in the tank it will require drainage. If there appears to be coolant within the tank, this can be a signal of a problem elsewhere with the compressor.
  • Brake Lines: you are able to visually inspect the brake lines to check for any damage of holes. If you notice a decline in air pressure this could indicate a crack or loosening in the brake line causing air to leak out. Blockages can occur within the line itself, which will require the line to be removed, cleaned and replaced.
  • System Valves: a truck's air brake system contains a number of values all assisting to maintain consistent airflow in and out of the supply tanks. This part of the air brake system is very sensitive to any oil, residue, moisture or rust and will require repair.
