How to know when it’s time for gearbox and clutch change

As a diesel truck owner, it is extremely important you know when your vehicle’s clutch and gearbox needs repairing or replacing. The clutch is important when driving heavy vehicles as it lets your vehicle gain speed and increase towing power as it transfers power from the truck’s engine to the wheels. They require regular services by an expert in order to have a good, long road life. However, clocking up the kilometres around the West Australian roads will eventually take its toll on your truck’s transmission, keeping up proper maintenance schedules and servicing will help avoid costly problems like failed transmission parts and clutch damage.

A truck’s clutch can come in all shapes and sizes depending on the towing power and speed capabilities of your vehicle. However, they all require correct maintenance and servicing. It’s always best practice to get a Perth diesel mechanic to look over your vehicle’s transmission early if you notice a problem. This will prevent any further damage to your vehicle and costly repairs in the long run.

What to look out for

  • What’s that sound? You drive your diesel vehicle the most, and you know what it sounds like. All the noises that you have come to expect when starting the ignition, braking and changing gears. It’s when you notice a noise that is out of the ordinary for example a grinding sound while shifting gears, you should be concerned. If you start noticing sounds when you are changing gears that are not normal, then take your vehicle to your local Perth diesel mechanic.
  • What’s that burning smell? If it smells like something is burning in your truck, this is not a good sign. The burning smell occurs if the clutch has been damaged due to overheating or wear and tear. If this is happening, you need to get your truck to a Perth mechanic ASAP in order to prevent further damage to your diesel truck. If you are concerned about the safety of driving your vehicle, simply call a Perth mobile mechanic. DieselWest will come to you for your truck repair.
  • What’s with the gear delay? If you are finding it difficult to shift gears, either the truck shifts awkwardly between them or refuses to go into a gear altogether – your heavy vehicle may be leaking transmission fluid. Your diesel truck should never drop out of gear while the vehicle is cruising or accelerating, and the clutch shouldn’t be stiff when engaged. These could be signs could indicate a problem with your truck’s clutch. If you are experiencing any of these problems there is most likely a problem with your transmission, and should be looked at by a local diesel mechanic.
  • What’s the engine light doing on? You should always be paying attention to warning lights in your vehicle. If you turn on the ignition and the engine light remains on, there is a problem. While it may not be related directly to your transmission, your truck is letting you know something is wrong. Always book in to see a mechanic to find out what the problem is before further damage occurs.
