Getting the most out of your diesel engine

Although diesel has always tended to be the first choice in industrial settings, diesel engines are becoming increasingly popular in the commercial world. One of the main benefits of a diesel engine is that they tend to be more efficient and longer lasting.

Although diesel engines may last longer than petrol engines, you still need to keep on top of maintenance to make sure you get the best out of your engine. Today, we’ll be looking at some easy ways to help your diesel engine go the distance.
Keep on top of general maintenance

Outside of your regular servicing, there are a few simple maintenance items which ensure a clean engine. Keep an eye on your oil and coolant and top up as necessary. Don’t buy the cheapest oil you can find – good quality oil will keep your engine running smoothly. Check the quality of your oil every 10,000kms or so and organise an oil change if there is a lot of sediment.

Learn how to do simple replacements

Although you should leave complex issues and servicing to the professionals, there are some parts of your diesel engine which are easy enough to replace and help the longevity of your engine. Changing the air and fuel filters are simple tasks which can save you money if you do it yourself at home. As a general rule, your filters should be changed every 10,000kms. Consult your owner manual and always ensure the engine is switched off before performing replacements.

If your vehicle’s manual doesn’t give clear instructions about how to conduct simple replacements, have a chat to your mechanic next time you’re in for a service.

Don’t ignore strange noises

If you’re starting to hear your diesel engine making strange sounds, don’t just ignore it or assume that it’s normal for diesel engines to sound funny from time to time. Some noise in your engine is normal but keep an ear out for anything out of the ordinary. Strange noises in your engine, such as sudden knocking or rattling, can be indicative of a more serious problem and you need to get it checked out by your mechanic.

Regular servicing

Because of their reputation for being long lasting, it’s easy to put servicing your diesel engine on the back burner. While it’s true that diesel engines tend to be tougher than their petrol counterparts, you still need to make sure that you keep on top of your regular services to ensure your engine continues to run optimally.

Even if your engine is running fine, a qualified diesel mechanic will be able to pick up on any issues before they become bigger problems down the track.
