When it comes to diesel vehicles, most people don’t give much thought to the driveline. After all, unlike your engine which is easily seen once you open the hood, you can’t even see the driveline unless you take the time to crawl under your vehicle. However, you’ll start thinking about your driveline a whole lot more if something goes wrong with it. Although drivelines go largely unnoticed, they are an essential component to your vehicle and are critical for vehicle reliability.
Today, we’ll get better acquainted with your vehicles driveline and explore why proper repair and maintenance is so essential.

What is the driveline?

The driveline of a vehicle is the group of components that delivers power to the driving wheels and doesn’t include the engine or the motor. It runs between the transmission and drive axels and provides the power that turns the wheels. The driveline is critical is making sure your diesel vehicle is running properly because without it functioning properly, the power created in the engine would stop at the transmission and the wheels wouldn’t turn. Basically, without a properly functioning driveline, your vehicle won’t move.

The driveline is made up on a number of components, including a drive shaft with a universal joint at each end. The precise components of a driveline vary according to the type of vehicle.

Signs that there is an issue with your vehicle’s driveline

Your driveline is located underneath your vehicle which means it takes a lot of punishment from water, road debris and dust. Although drivelines are built to withstand this kind of environment, things can still go wrong.

A common sign that something is wrong with your driveline is intense vibrations from underneath the vehicle. Drivelines are balanced so they don’t vibrate, so this could be a sign of certain components wearing out. Along with vibrations, abnormal sounds can be an indication of a bigger problem so call your mechanic if you’re hearing rattling, clunking or scraping sounds.
